I remember when Midwifery Today compiled its first Tricks of the Trade book. It was a funky, delightful, utilitarian collection of the midwives' techniques that had been lovingly offered up in the magazine's first several issues and then gathered into Midwifery Today's very first book. (If you still own one of those first of two editions of Volume I, it's probably a collector's item!) Many years later, here is the third volume—an elegant, beautifully designed effort that includes scores of tricks of the birth practitioner's trade and numerous full-length articles arranged in groups: Philosophy of Care; Remedies (including ample herbal lore, homeopathy and other holistic treatments for everything from heartburn to sore bottoms to miscarriage); Prenatal (topics include nutrition, staving off infection, postmaturity and prolonged pregnancy); Labor (topics include twins, alternatives to induction, prolonged labor and back labor); Birth; Immediate Postpartum; and Newborn Care & Breastfeeding (including kangaroo care, slings and yeast infection remedies). Sidebars, line drawings, study outlines, tables and amazing photographs complement and augment the lengthier inclusions.
